A Delray Beach teen got caught Thursday stealing a sports car, but told police that he didn’t actually steal it “rather just went for a joyride,” according to city police.
Police arrested Jesse Lee Anderson, 19, on Thursday on charges of grand theft auto.
On Sept. 19, a Delray Beach resident reported to police that his 2014 Chevy Camaro was stolen at his apartment east of Interstate 95 just south of Linton Boulevard. He said a spare set of keys was in the car’s glove compartment.
As police investigated, a woman called a few days later and said she saw the same Camaro in her gated community near West Atlantic Avenue that was backed into a parking space. She told police she saw Anderson, and when she tried to say hello to him, he covered his face, mumbled, and walked away.
Police located and arrested Anderson less than a mile away from where the Camaro was parked. As officers questioned Anderson, he said that he knew the car was stolen “but he did not steal it, rather just went for a joyride,” the arrest report states.
Anderson remained in the Palm Beach County Jail on Friday on a $1,000 bail.
