A Riviera Beach woman is facing child neglect charges after she left a 4-year-old boy inside a running car Monday night while she shopped at a Publix Super Market in Palm Beach Gardens, according to an arrest report.
Palm Beach Gardens police said the child was left alone for about 20 minutes.
Rhianne Lee Unfer was released from the Palm Beach County Jail on Tuesday after posting a $6,000 bond.
Court records show this isn’t the first time Unfer, 30, is facing child neglect charges. She was arrested on Sept. 11, 2015 after leaving an unidentified child in a car and plead guilty. Unfer was credited with one day in jail and ordered to pay court costs.
In Monday’s incident, a Palm Beach Gardens officer pulled up behind a white Ford that was parked in a fire lane in front of the Publix in the Promenade Shopping Plaza on Alternate A1A. The car’s hazard lights were on.
When the officer went to check on the vehicle, he found the child sleeping in the back. The officer opened the unlocked hatchback to check on the boy and waited another 5 or 10 minutes before Unfer emerged from the store.
“I was just getting his medications,” Unfer said upon seeing the officer.
The report states that Unfer did purchase medications but also bought a bottle of Gatorade and lottery tickets.
