A fight over an overdue paycheck left both employer and employee bruised after the disagreement turned physical, Boca Raton police said.

Jose Gutierrez of Boca Raton told city police he hit his boss in the arm with a metal bar Wednesday night, leading police to arrest him on aggravated battery charges. The fight began, the 22-year-old told police, because he wanted to be paid.

The boss, who told police he worked in car sales, had bruising on his left forearm, according to a police report. Gutierrez, who told police he currently was unemployed, was bruised on his knee and knuckle.

Gutierrez originally told police the fight escalated when his boss pushed him. The two were wrestling on the ground, he said, when the boss grabbed a metal bar and hit him on the knee and knuckle.

His boss fled the scene, Gutierrez said, but returned to tell city police his side of the story. His employee threatened to “(expletive) me up,” the boss told police, so the boss grabbed the metal bar for self defense.

Gutierrez eventually took the bar from him, he said, and hit the boss twice on the arm.

Gutierrez later said his boss’ version of the story is what happened.

When police arrested the 22-year-old they found a glass pipe in his pocket with marijuana residue in it, so police also charged him with having drug paraphernalia.

Gutierrez was taken to Boca Raton Regional Hospital before being taken to the Palm Beach County Jail, where he is being held on a $6,000 bond, according to court records.
