A suburban Boca Raton man has been arrested following a hit-and-run accident that left a bicyclist with head injuries, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
Lawrence Lentol, 61, was charged early Thursday with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, after he allegedly struck a bicyclist near the intersection of Powerline Road and Camino Real west of Boca Raton on Aug. 11. Lentol was released later that day on $3,000 bond.
According to a probable-cause affidavit, a sheriff’s deputy arrived around 3 a.m. Thursday to the scene of the accident and saw the victim, 27, lying in the road in a pool of blood and bleeding from his head. The victim was treated at Delray Medical Center.
One witness said that after Lentol hit the victim, he got out of his car, a 2004 Nissan sedan, and said, “My God, I killed him.” The witness said Lentol did not call 911, and instead got back in his car and drove away. A different witness reported hearing Lentol say, “I had three beers,” before leaving the scene, the affidait said.
The first witness recorded Lentol’s license plate number and relayed it to 911 dispatchers. According to PBSO, when deputies arrived at Lentol’s home he admitted to the accident, saying, “I know why you are here. I hit him,” to the deputies.
