John Mason Jr. was arrested for aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held on $75,000 bail.
Mason, 52, and the victim started fighting on Tuesday morning, August 2 near the 600 block of 52nd Street. It’s unclear what started the fight, but this was not the first altercation between the two men.
Mason allegedly had a stick in his hand when he approached the 42-year-old victim, who also picked up a stick to defend himself, according to an arrest report made public Monday. In response, Mason pulled out a gun.
The victim said they would just fight, and that he didn’t need the gun. Mason then shot. The bullet hit the victim in between the second and third knuckle of his hand and shot through the victim’s hand until it stopped at his forearm.
Mason has eight previous felony convictions, according to the arrest report.
