A Broward County man is the second person to be arrested in connection with an alleged attempted murder in May at a home in unincorporated Lantana.
Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies arrested Voltaire Burgess, 21, of Deerfield Beach on Friday on multiple charges, including one count each of attempted felony murder, aggravated assault and shooting into a building. He was being held without bail Monday at the Palm Beach County Jail.
In June, 22-year-old Jerrod Moore was arrested on similar charges from the same incident. Investigators say that on the afternoon of May 19, the two men entered a home 1000 block of Ridge Road and fired shots at a 27-year-old man.
The intended target was able to hide in a bedroom until Burgess and Moore left, according to a sheriff’s probable-cause arrest affidavit. The man told deputies Burgess and Moore came to his house asking for someone he did not know.
He told them they were at the wrong house and walked back inside to check on his child, the affidavit said. The door was left open and Burgess and Moore followed the man inside, the sheriff’s office said.
Burgess allegedly pulled out a small silver revolver and yelled “you better tighten up” before attempting to fire the weapon. The gun malfunctioned twice as the resident ran to his bedroom and closed the door. The alleged victim told deputies a round was fired through his door before Burgess and Moore fled the home.
The arrest report does not indicate that anyone was hurt during the incident.
Burgess has long criminal history, including robberies, batteries and drug and weapons offenses, the sheriff’s office said. As a juvenile, he was found guilty of being delinquent multiple times, the last being in 2012, according to the affidavit.
