A 17-year-old from Delray Beach is being charged as an adult for his alleged role in a bump-and-run carjacking last month west of Lantana.
Jashaun Harper was transferred to the Palm Beach County Jail Monday. He was being held Tuesday in lieu of $50,000 bail. Harper’s charges were elevated for the first of two carjacking incidents in which he is alleged to have been involved. He previously was being held at the juvenile detention center after his May 1 arrest for an alleged carjacking in suburban Boca Raton.
Harper and two older teens were arrested and investigators analyzed their fingerprints. The fingerprints linked Harper and 19-year-old Dontrail Spruill, also of Delray Beach, to an April 18 bump-and-run carjacking on Vespasian Court, off Military Trail south of Lantana Road, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
A woman told told investigators she was driving home that night when her silver Infiniti was hit from behind by another vehicle. When she got out to inspect the damage, a passenger from the other vehicle jumped into her car and drove away, the sheriff’s office said.
The woman was able to track her iPhone, which was still in the car, and the vehicle was found abandoned a short time later.
On May 1, a woman driving a BMW on Jog Road near Yamato Road in suburban Boca Raton reported being the victim of a similar crime. Police used the car’s LoJack device to track it to a home in Delray.
Police arrested Harper, Spruill and 19-year-old Christian Jerry of Delray Beach in connection with that incident.
