A Boca Raton man was arrested last week after his 87-year-old mother was found living in squalor, with ants and gnats crawling over her body, police said.
Rosario Michael DeMarco, 59, is facing one count of neglect of an elderly or disabled adult. His arrest Friday came after police responded to his home on Christmas Day to conduct a welfare check on his mother.
DeMarco was released under supervision Saturday after posting $3,000 bail.
According to police, his mother was found lying in a bed they described as unsanitary and covered with stains. The bedroom and bathroom had not not been cleaned recently, and the woman’s toenails were overgrown and curling around her skin, police said. Officers spoke to DeMarco, who confirmed that he was his mother’s primary caretaker, according to a police probable-cause arrest affidavit.
He said he, his mother and a pet dog lived at the home. DeMarco was observed slurring his speech and stumbling while walking, police said. His mother was taken to Boca Raton Hospital for treatment.
Further investigation showed that a prescription for one of her medications had not been filled in more than six months, police said.
