Boynton police: Man stole money from Macy’s for pregnant girlfriend, engagement ring

A former Macy’s employee was arrested by Boynton Beach police after he allegedly stole more than $5,000 from the department store. He told police he knew it was wrong but wanted to buy his pregnant girlfriend an engagement ring and baby clothes, according to the police report.

Daniel Exalus, 31, faces charges of fraud and grand theft. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in the Palm Beach County jail on $2,000 bail.

As early as Christmas Eve 2015, police said Exalus gradually took money several different ways from his job at Macy’s at the Boynton Beach Mall. Sometimes he would take the cash customers gave him and put it next to the register instead of inside it. He also rang up items for himself that he never purchased and made payments to his own Macy’s account, according to police.

In November 2015, another former employee at the same Macy’s was arrested.

Exalus was previously arrested for domestic battery in 2009, but the charges were never filed, according to court records.
