A high school band teacher in Port St. Lucie was arrested Monday for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student.
Gary Anthony Burnette, 26, a band teacher at Centennial High School, is accused of having the relationship with a 15-year-old girl. He is facing charges of sexual battery by a custodian and lewd and lascivious behavior on a minor.
WPTV-Channel 5 reports that Burnette has been fired from his position and is no longer employed by the St. Lucie County School district.
According to a Port St. Lucie police report made public Monday night, a student came forward and told a school resource officer that Burnette was having an inappropriate relationship with a classmate. The student reportedly told the officer a girl was sharing details about her alleged relationship with Burnette on the social media app Kik.
After agreeing to be interviewed, the girl reportedly told police she had sex with Burnette on the night he drove her home from a recent honors band show. According to police, Burnette initially told officers that rumors of the relationship were not true. However, he later admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with the student.
