The Boynton Beach Police Department this weekend released startling footage of a driver blowing through a red light at an intersection.
The video, posted on the department’s Facebook page, is accompanied by words of caution: “We all need to slow down, put the cell phones down and pay attention to everything going on around us. Lives depend on it.”
The incident happened at an intersection along Woolbright Road. According to the Facebook post, the light was red for 10.4 seconds before an SUV speeds through, nearly hitting a pickup truck.
“In our ongoing effort to keep you safe and informed, our Traffic Unit will be sharing videos of red light camera violations on a regular basis,” the Facebook post says. “We hope that these videos create a constructive dialogue about the dangers of distracted driving.”
Boynton Beach Police Chief Jeffrey Katz weighed in on the video in a comment on the deparment’s post: “Here’s a simple public safety message: PUT YOUR PHONES DOWN AND DRIVE.”
