Former Delray Beach police volunteer charged with molesting minor

A former volunteer with the Delray Beach police department was arrested Tuesday on a charge of lewd and lascivious molestation on a minor, city police said.

Reynold Chery, 48, of Boynton Beach, was taken into custody after being questioned by detectives. On Monday, a woman told a Delray Beach police officer that Chery was having ongoing sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl. Chery confirmed to detectives Tuesday that he knows the girl and had sexual contact with her on one occasion, police spokeswoman Dani Moschella said. The girl reportedly gave detectives the same information.

According to police, Chery reportedly was a member of the police department’s Citizens On Patrol program from March 2007 to February 2009. He served in the Haitian Roving Patrol, a volunteer unit that patrols communities, shopping centers and other parking lots. He volunteered for 144 hours before resigning for unknown reasons.

Prior to becoming a volunteer, he passed a criminal background check, police said.
